IP over DVB (ipdvb) -WG CLOSED

Brief Introduction

These web pages are maintained on behalf of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) ipdvb Working Group (in the IETF Internet Area). Details of the activities of this WG can be found in the ipdvb WG Charter.. The WG is now closed, further work if needed will be undertaken in the IETF INTAREA.

The work of the ipdvb WG related to the use of IPv4/IPv6 over the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) and other Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) link technology. The MPEG-2 system was defined by the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and has been standardised by the International Standards Organisation (ISO). The MPEG-2 TS provides a transmission network that has become widely used to support digital TV broadcast, including: DVB, ATSC, ISDB. These and related standards define a set of commercially available mass-produced components that are increasingly used to provide a general-purpose packet transmission network that are used to build IP subnetworks. A related set of DVB standards specify Generic Stream Enacapsulation (GSE) that provdies IP-only transmission. GSE and ULE share a common Type field and extension header formats, allowing the same set of extensions to be used in both encapsulations.

The ipdvb WG was one of many IETF Internet Area groups that develop protocols and documents for IPv4 and IPv6 over a range of lower layer network technologies. These are often collectively called "IP over foo" activities within the IETF, and have included Ethernet, Infiniband, 802.16/WiMax, IP over Resilient Packet Rings, IPv6 over Low power WPAN and other technologies.
