SILAS Project

Information about the SILAS project

SILAS is an acronym for "Study of the Issues in Linking ATM networks via Satellite". This project was first funded during 1995 by the Defence Research Agency (DRA) Open Distributed Systems (ODS) group at DRA Malvern. The goal of the project was to investigate the issues concerning the interconnection of broadband islands using satellite links. The principle workers on the project were Gorry Fairhurst and Cheng at the the University of Aberdeen.

The project has continued on a lower key during 1996, and continues to collect data relating to the performance of ATM over satellite links, the development of new techniques optimised for satellite use and to collate the work of other researchers in this area. If you know of further interest in the use of ATM ovber satellite links, or have information concerning other related projects, then please do contact us.
